About

Mission

The Krieger Elementary School staff believes that every child should be treated with respect and be given the opportunity to grow in knowledge and self-esteem through quality education. Our students can achieve these goals by being encouraged to do their best and take pride in work well done. The key to our success will be a partnership among parents, students and staff - a partnership based on respect, support and involvement.

Krieger School Motto

Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Krieger School Is All You Need.

Beliefs

  • Education is a shared responsibility.
  • Everyone deserves an environment that promotes learning and respect.
  • We need to recognize everyone's uniqueness.
  • Shared decisions equal shared responsibility.
  • Choices have lifelong impact.
Programs

After School Program

  • The after-school program at Krieger Elementary School provides safe, free, enrichment-based quality programming from 2:20 - 5:20 pm , Monday - Friday. Our program offers four types of activities to participants.

The four basic components of our program are:

  • Snack/Social

For the first 30 minutes children eat a nutritious snack with juice or milk while engaging in social time with their peers. Staff and volunteers sit with the students, serving as mentors, while they gauge the overall well-being of the children.

  • Physical Recreation

Students are provided with 40-50 minutes of physical recreation either in the gymnasium, playground or other appropriate areas. Staff engages participants in organized games or they provide supervision of un-structured play time.

  • Academic Enrichment

The Krieger After-School Program is not a homework completion program. Students are given time to work on homework with meaningful assistance from staff/volunteers, though they are neither expected to complete nor forced to work on assignments.

The Program offers specialized tutor assistance through Marist and Vassar Colleges as well as the Poughkeepsie High School Partnership with Business. Krieger ASP uses FastForward literacy enrichment manual designed to help children learn language arts through games and the arts—during our Academic Enrichment portions.

  • Enhancements

During the Enhancements students are exposed to numerous ideas, arts, entertainment, etc. Some of this year's Enhancements will include:

Art Clubs, Life Skills, Ice Skating Trips, Drum Clubs, Talent shows, Karaoke Fridays, Mentoring, Community Service Projects, Fashion- Shows, Drama Club, and Dancing Clubs

    Enrollment

At this time, the Krieger After-School Program is fully enrolled with 110 students.  There are currently 60 children on the waitlist for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Participants are divided into five groups. Four groups (grades K-4) contain 20 children, while the fifth group has 30 participants (ages 10-12).
