Warring students get engineering lesson from IBMers
Warring Elementary fifth grade students today welcomed several guests from IBM for a special lesson in engineering.
The visit was part of the Mid-Hudson Valley Engineers Week program, in which engineers are visiting schools around the region this spring. National Engineers Week, or EWeek, was held Feb. 22-28 this year.
The students first watched a two-minute video focusing on an unbeatable robotic soccer goalkeeper and the science attached to it. Then, they were asked to break into groups to create their own goalie for a shoebox-sized goal using seven straws, three notecards, four paperclips and tape. Many of the goalies created held up to the foil ball flung toward them. Students were rewarded with hearty applause from their classmates, an IBM and OnSemi pencil and a certificate of participation in Engineers Week 2026.
Engineers are scheduled to visit Poughkeepsie High School to conduct different lessons next week.
