The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education is soliciting resumes from individuals interested in seeking appointments as new members of the Board of Education.

The Board of Education is responsible for governance of the district, focusing on planning, policy-making, goal-setting, fiscal oversight, and communication with residents and administration.

Applicants are asked to send a resume and their availability for a meeting with one or more current Board members to Board Clerk Becky Torres through email at btorres@poughkeepsieschools.org or by sending through traditional mail to Becky Torres, 18 S. Perry St., Poughkeepsie, NY, 12601.

This call for applications is the result of two recent vacancies.  Members Hon. Thomas O’Neill and Kelleyann Royce-Giron resigned in July. If one or more appointments are made, the new member(s) would serve until the next general election on May 19, 2026, at which time the member(s) may choose to run for re-election.  The board holds two regular business meetings per month, and members are required to attend in person or, under certain circumstances or conditions, may attend remotely.

Specific Requirements and Considerations for a School Board Member Candidate:

  • Citizenship and Residency: Candidates must be U.S. citizens and residents of the school district for at least one year before the appointment.
  • Age and Voting Status: Must be at least 18 years old and a qualified voter in the district.
  • Literacy: Candidates must be able to read and write.
  • District Employment: Individuals cannot be employed by the Poughkeepsie City School District.
  • Felony Conviction: A felony conviction may disqualify a candidate.
  • Family Relationships: Individuals cannot be a spouse or relative living in the same household as a current board member.
  • Can not be an elected official of the City of Poughkeepsie or hold any other incompatible public office.

Applicants can expect a rigorous interview process, which may include input from the public, staff, and community partners.
