Poughkeepsie Reading Challenge enjoys successful 1st week: Here's how we're doing

Posted Date: 02/06/26 (02:53 PM)

As the first week of the Poughkeepsie Reading Challenge comes to a close, Superintendent of Schools Gregory Mott is happy to report district students are already on track to meet the goal of 1 million cumulative minutes read by the end of the school year.
By Friday morning, students had already totaled roughly 43,000 minutes, with more coming through the day.
Listen to what the superintendent had to say about what he noticed from the first week here.
The Poughkeepsie Reading Challenge began Monday. All students, from pre-K to high school seniors, are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes a day, with dedicated class time devoted to help them reach that objective. This week also saw the first Poughkeepsie Reads Wednesday, in which all students throughout each building will drop what they’re working on and read for 20 minutes at the same time each week.
Learn more about the initiative at poughkeepsieschools.org/readingchallenge and take a look at a special first Poughkeepsie Reads Wednesday below. The district will provide regular updates regarding progress toward our Reading Challenge goals, including numerous ways in which students and schools will be rewarded and recognized for their efforts as the project progresses.
